The Lifelong Benefits of Playing a Musical Instrument

In case you’re unfamiliar with the amazing cognitive benefits that come from learning a musical instrument, check out this short and sweet video from TED Ed.

Not only is playing a musical instrument beneficial for your brain, but the younger you can start, the more second-nature the language of music will become! That’s thanks to what we call meaningful play with pitch during the critical years for auditory development, which is the basis for many of the lessons inside the Preschool Prodigies Playground.

What Is Preschool Prodigies?

Preschool Prodigies your one-stop-shop to teaching your kids how to play an instrument.

Once you’ve enrolled in the Preschool Prodigies Playground, you’ll have access to our website that provides step-by-step music lessons specifically for children ages 3-7.

The website delivers a series of video music lesson with host and creator, Mr. Rob.

Each video also comes with colorful sheet music, printable activities, parent/teacher guidance and video annotations for making the most out of each lesson.

The lessons focus on playing a colorful instrument, singing with the Solfege hand-signs, and developing your musical ear through listening games. We also play a lot of call and response rhythm songs to teach children to read and understand rhythms at an early age.

Your House Will Come to Life with Music…

With our fun, accessible and modern music lesson program, your kids can be getting a music education while you cook dinner, read a book or get caught up on your own life!

Music lessons are a time-honored tradition in many homes and families, and for good reason; they’re fun, beneficial for the brain and their a great way to learn the meta-skill of learning (in other words, learning a musical instrument helps you learn the process of learning).

But going to a music studio can be time consuming and expensive, and hiring an instructor to come to your home is even more costly.

Many people pay between $150-$300 dollars A MONTH for music lessons. And that’s just for one hour each week…

With Preschool Prodigies, you’ll have instant and continous access to over 75 video music lessons that you can do from anywhere!

And with our limited-time offer of a LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP to the PsP Playground, you’ll be paying a tiny fraction of what it costs for typical music lessons.

Plus, with School-Age Prodigies (2017) and Piano Prodigies (2018) coming out soon, the program will grow with your kids for years and years worth of musical fun!

The Videos

The curriculum is centered around a series of videos hosted by a beloved preschool music teacher, Mr. Rob. In the videos, Mr. Rob introduces individual musical notes, simple rhythms and concepts in a way that is slow, easy to understand and relatable for both kids and adults.

Children enjoy the colorful, musical repetition and silly interactions with Mr. Rob while they develop their sense for music through consistent and meaningful exposure to pitch.

The Bells

For young children (2-5), these bells make the ideal starting instrument. They stay in tune, they are difficult to break and most importantly, they allow your child to focus on a single (or a select few) musical notes.

The colors of the bells make identifying musical notes easy, and they match up with the world’s most popular note-coloring system, Chromanotes(TM). The colors create errorless musical play for your students, which helps develop their ability to predict and eventually memorize the sound of each different musical note.

*Please note that the bells are sold separately.

The Workbooks

The video lessons are paired step-by-step with integrated workbooks and songsheets. The workbooks give children a chance to practice the songs at their own pace, guide students in writing their own simple melodies and songs, and reinforce basic preschool skills like patterning, left and right, colors, numbers, letters and hand-writing.

My First Songbook Series

While the workbooks contain many nursery school classics and plenty of colorful song sheets, the Songbooks provide a concise collection of kid-friendly classics that are perfect for performances, learning new songs and practicing old favorites. While they do scale in difficulty and complexity as they progress, they are not directly integrated with the progression of videos, and therefore are meant as a supplement, bonus or classroom center.

Playing the bells with classic children’s songs is a great way to make your child’s musical play more memorable and our songbooks make it super easy to play famous melodies in minutes, even if you have no idea how to read music!

The Hand Signs

The Curwen hand signs give kids a kinesthetic action to associate with each Solfege syllable. This helps children focus on their singing and even develop memorized pitch! Even babies can hand-sign which makes it a great introduction to pitch!

NEW: Games & Activities

We recently introduced some simple games to make the Playground even more fun! Try two of them below!

Piano Friendly

Though the Playground is designed around a set of colorful bells, the videos and curriculum can be easily used with a piano as well. All it takes is some inexpensive color coded stickers and any piano is instantly PSP friendly. Complete the curriculum once with the bells, and go back a second time through on the piano.

Boomwhacker Friendly

Everything PsP is color coded to match the popular classroom instrument, Boomwhackers. While they’re a little harder to play for one person (as they involve picking up, striking and putting back down) they are great in group settings or if you turn them into a xylophone!

Curriculum Structure

Preschool Prodigies is a 3 year program that takes children from playing a single color coded bell all the way up to playing all 12 musical notes with two hands on a piano. While the program is outlined for 3, 4 and 5 year olds, it is certainly useable by older children who haven’t had prior musical training.

Each year of the 3 year program consists of

  • 8 months of lesson plans divided into 8 chapters (step-by-step lesson plans for 30-45 minute per week of programming)
  • 50+ video lessons, divided into 6 videos per chapter
  • 2 Integrated Workbooks, each containing 4 chapters worth of songs sheets and activities to guide students through the program (approximately 200 pages each)
  • Teacher Training that introduces, explains and reviews the upcoming Chapter (live webinar trainings and video replays planned for 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019)
  • Supplemental videos for extra practice, tips and tricks for expanded activities

Year 1 focuses on…

  • Meeting and practicing with all 8 of the C Major Bells via simple call and response songs and famous melodies
  • Building, recognizing and identifying the I Chord (C Major), the IV Chord (F Major) and the V Chord (G Major)
  • Singing and hand-signing with the Curwen (Solfége) Hand Signs
  • Playing a steady beat and playing simple rhythms with Kodaly syllables and fruit-rhythms (Beet, Cherry, Avocado, etc.)
  • Reading color-coded musical notes on the treble clef
  • Basic preschool skills like patterns, left and right, handwriting, color-coding, etc.

Year 2 focuses on…

  • Continued practice with all 8 of the C Major Bells via simple call and response songs and famous melodies
  • Introducing the Sharps and Flats (accidentals) in simple melodies and modal jam sessions (requires 5 additional bells)
  • Building, recognizing and identifying the minor chords (D Minor, E Minor and A Minor)
  • Singing and hand-signing more advanced chordal patterns with the Curwen (Solfége) Hand Signs
  • Reading numerical rhythms with Note Knacks and actual notation
  • Reading color-coded musical notes on the treble clef
  • Getting children to play Preschool Prodigies songs on a piano using a color-coded glove and stickers (optional aside)

Year 3 focuses on…

  • Continued practice with all 12 of the musical notes with an emphasis on identifying them via listening games and interactive web-based games
  • Playing the piano and translating the ideas we learned on bells to the piano with both the left and the right hands
  • Building different chord patterns using popular chords
  • Recognizing and identifying all of the chords (I, ii, iii IV, V, vi and VIIb)
  • Singing and hand-signing even more advanced chordal patterns with the Curwen (Solfége) Hand Signs
  • Reading and counting whole more advanced rhythms like triplets, sixteenths and eighth via their actual notation
  • Understanding the idea of “swing”
  • Transitioning kids from color-coded music to black and white music (so that they aren’t reliant on colors as they move out of PsP)

Your Students Will…

🎤 Sing and Hand-Sign with Solfége 👐

Singing with Solfége (Do, Re, Mi etc.) is the foundation of many early music programs. Just watch the Sound of Music again, and you’ll remember just how fun “Do Re Mi” can be.

We’ve also adopted the Curwen Hand Signs to give Solfége a kinesthetic component. The kinesthetic component helps develop memorized pitch as well as helps give shy singers a way to interact and slowly come out of their shell! Because the hand signs are color- coded with the rest of the program, it means that even if you don’t have a set of bells on hand, you can follow along with the appropriate hand signs.

🎶 Learn to Play an Instrument 🔔

TED Ed’s Anita Collins called playing a musical instrument “the brain’s equivalent of a full body workout,” which makes a lot of sense. Playing an instrument takes coordination, good timing and a mind dedicated to practicing, and it rewards you in all kinds of amazing ways.

By giving young children the color-coded bells, you’ve got an almost error-proof instrument that will stay in tune and is always ready to go. That makes the instrument more approachable than piano or guitar, so kids can focus on developing their coordination abilities and their sense of how the musical sounds go together without getting frustrated over their lack of fine motor control.

This means your child can get into the habit of practicing their instrument on their own, which helps turn them into an independent and life-long learner!

👂 Develop a Musical Ear 🎵

Did you know that children who receive meaningful play with pitch during the preschool years grow up with a sense for pitch that is 7-8 times greater than children who don’t receive play with pitch? The bells make it easy to give young kids meaningful play with individual pitches, while the videos present musical concepts in a fun and understandable way that will teach your child to recognize notes and chords, thus improving their sense of relative and perfect pitch.

Inside the Playground, we play listening games that practice listening to individual notes as well as chords. We present the listening exercises much in the way the Taneda method does, which has been giving children perfect pitch since the 1980s.

👏 Develop a Sense of Rhythm

Through call and response songs like Sweet Beets, and easy to follow rhythmic notation modeled off Note Knacks, we help your child develop their life long sense of rhythm. Whether you’re clapping along, drumming along, or banging some Boomwhackers like there’s no tomorrow, Mr. Rob’s energy and enthusiasm around all things rhythmic shines through and your child will be Ta-Ta-Ti-Ti-Taing themselves to sleep each night!

👶 Sing About Colors, Numbers and Letters 🎨

While singing and hand-signing with Solfége is great, we recognize that there are many ways to talk about the language of music. By singing about colors, scale degrees (the numbers one through eight), and the musical note names (A, B, C, D, E, F, G), not only do we reinforce the sounds of music, but we reinforce basic preschool concepts like letters and counting. It’s true that we’re usually only dealing with 8 colors, letters and numbers, but the variation is both fun and confidence-boosting for young learners.

🎼 Practice Reading Music

Teaching young children to read music is a big point of contention amongst music educators. Some people think it’s the only way to go, while others think it’s definitely the wrong thing to focus on.

Here at PsP, we believe that reading music is a skill that’s much easier learned by school-age children and that preschool children should focus on developing their musical ear. That’s essentially why we made a color-coded system, so that you don’t have to read music to play along. The colors guide you much the way labeling the notes can guide you.

This removes the biggest barrier and frustration from playing music: learning to read the grand staff. Instead, we focus on unleashing your child’s musical enthusiasm and creativity.

That said, plenty of the videos feature the treble clef, but WITH the color-coded notes. We do talk about how to read music on the staff, but we aren’t forcing them to learn the lines and spaces with black and white music just yet.

This gets children acquainted with the treble clef without forcing them to understand it perfectly. The latter third of the program does specifically focus on the treble clef. Through songs like “Every Girl Buys Dresses Friday” and “Face in the Space,” Mr. Rob introduces the treble clef in a way that’s colorful and fun.

📝 Write Songs and Complete Cross-Curricular Activities

The integrated workbooks will have your kids writing their own songs, tracing the letters of the musical notes and much, much more. The workbooks reinforce basic preschool skills while teaching children the language of music!

🎹 Learn Basic Piano/Keyboard Skills (coming soon)

Toward the end of the program, Mr. Rob introduces children to the piano and shows them the parallels between the bells we’ve been playing and the piano keyboard. He introduces some basic techniques and hand positions before inviting kids to try some of the previous lessons, as well as some piano specific lessons, using their new techniques. This content has not been released yet and is scheduled for production in the Fall of 2016.

Testimonials from the Preschool Prodigies Playground

“When I perused [the curriculum] I was completely blown away. The whole thing integrates so well with each other – the videos with the books, and the entire scope and sequence. This is a very carefully laid out, complete curriculum. Step one, step two, no guesswork on what to do, when to progress, etc.

The books are really cute too! The pacing and skills taught are perfect for preschoolers, but I would not hesitate to recommend it for older children too.”

– Tamsyn Spackman,

“I was worried my kids might take after my husband as far as musical talent is concerned (his talents lie elsewhere), until we started following PsP.  Our kids have been doing a leading international music programme designed for babies and small children since they were about 6 months old. To my disappointment, they never seemed particularly enthusiastic about music and my daughter, especially, never liked to sing.

Now, my kids are both eagerly singing and playing along with Mr Rob’s videos – often in tune, too.  They give ‘concerts’ to anyone who happens to be around after a music lesson to show off what they have learned (cue their long-suffering daddy).  I love how your program made our house come alive with music!  Thank you so much!”

– Marina, South Africa

Everyday Boo has music lessons w/ his bells! This is called Preschool Prodigies. It teaches solfege, simple songs, chords, and all sorts of other musical things. He hits his little bells and sings part of the songs.

He can already sing on pitch and knows several of the solfege names and their pitches. He doesn’t hit the right bell just yet in accordance with the correct pitch, but we are working on that. Children are never too young to learn music and sing on pitch. Just because he is two doesn’t mean he has to do “cute, off pitch” singing. Teach them early! Boo spends about 30 mins doing this…not because I make him but because he wants to. He gets so excited when I get his bells out!

– Michael Mandy Lining

“First of all, this curriculum is really effective. So far my classes are more fun, more satisfying, and getting every child to be engaged. So far, the students are singing very close to pitch and using fairly good singing voices. Also, the videos are very helpful to me as a teacher because I can spend more time watching the students for accuracy instead of the normal routine.”

– Nick (K-12 Music Teacher)

““I have a 9 year old and a 4 month old… and they both LOVE the program on two very different levels! My four-month-old enjoys the overall music, rhythms and beats…and mirrors us with as much coordination as she can muster.

Her favorite is when I pull out the drums!!! She just goes to town!!! My 9 year old enjoys participating as is and if it happens to be a little too easy for him, he will just pick up his recorder and play along with that! Such a great program!! Thank you!”

– Krissy Fulton, Mother of 2

Hi Rob, just want to say that we are really enjoying the curriculum! My daughter was amazed that she was able to write her own music!

– Rena Alexandra

As a mother, I love watching my young children grow a passion for music. This past spring I started my two oldest children, who were 7, in piano lessons. I also wanted to start my 4 year old as well, but the level of discipline and understanding to comprehend the keys and notes on a piano were above her capabilities at the time.

Now, thanks to Preschool Prodigies, she is able to learn note and key recognition, giving her the ability to grow a passion for music and understand music theory before many music teachers will even accept her as a student.

Preschool Prodigies has created this program specifically for preschool age children, but based on my experience, my older children love it as much if not more than my younger ones. This makes it a great addition to any household.

Within ten minutes of reading through the workbook lessons and interacting on the website, my daughter was able to play multiple songs on the bells. I was impressed with her ability to read and play a song so quickly using the curriculum provided, including the Playground Access

Wow! What a well put together package. BrillKids Little Musician was a tough act to follow, but Preschool Prodigies really offered everything I was looking for. The sheet music is very child friendly. I can see kids who use this program being able to easily slip into sight-reading regular music when the time comes.

It is completely possible to teach a group of preschoolers using this programs. You can also us this program with your toddler or preschooler and learn more than one instrument.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Playground program?

For parents or teachers in a one-to-one setting, the average child will complete the Playground in about one calendar year. In a classroom setting, the program will take much longer.   In order to complete the program in one school year, we suggest that you use our accelerated pacing guide. Of course any teacher should feel comfortable rearranging the curriculum to fit his or her individual class.

The program is structured so that each month students complete a chapter of the Playground. Each chapter includes an average of 6 videos, a 30-50-page workbook, and an optional pacing guide that helps parents and teachers provide consistent, organized practice.

Because children learn at different speeds, we’ve provided plenty of supplemental activities. This way, if your child moves through the videos quickly and masters the songs, they won’t be left without materials.

What age is best for the PsP Playground?

While people both younger and older enjoy Preschool Prodigies, our curriculum is designed largely for kids ages 2-5. It is in this time period where children have the best chance of using a music curriculum to develop a life-long sense of pitch.

The Playground is an effective music introduction for kids of all ages because the lessons are relevant, powerful and enjoyable. For older kids, the videos may move a little slow, so by elementary school, little musicians should be moving away from the bells and onto the piano.

The videos also make a powerful tool for teaching music for older children and adults with learning delays. The colorful and easy to read music makes it easy for anyone to feel a sense of musical accomplishment!

What kind of shipping costs are there and does PsP ship international?

PsP does ship internationally! In fact, more than half of our users are outside of the U.S.

Shipping bells and things across the world can get expensive, so we’ve recently updated our system to calculate near-exact shipping costs based on your location.

In the Fall of 2016, we’re also going to be experimenting with some new drop-shipping services to hopefully save you some money on shipping costs and expedite shipping worldwide.

For larger orders (i.e. for classrooms, schools, etc) we can provide shipping quotes. We also accept purchase orders from schools and school-groups.

What if I get my bells and one is broken?

The bells are amongst the most durable instruments in the world. No tuning pegs to mess with, no wood that can break and very few moving parts at all. This is one of the reasons we love them so much.

There is a very small chance however (i.e. it has only happened once) that you’ll receive your bells and one won’t work for whatever reason.

If that’s the case, we will happily ship you an individual bell free of charge. Simply e-mail and we’ll get it taken care of for you right away.

Will PsP introduce too much "screen time"?

Many parents are concerned with the amount of screen time their children receive, and rightly so. These days, it’s unfortunately very common for adults to turn to TV or Youtube to passively occupy children. This sort of inactive viewing is indeed not good for children in high doses.

Although screen time is currently under scrutiny, experts’ concern is not with the physical screen on your computer, tablet, or smart phone, but with what you’re using that screen to show your child. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that passive screen time—or just “plopping the baby in front of a TV or film” (Hu, 2013) is the kind of screen time parents should avoid.

Experts in the same NPR article cited above suggest that this inactive screen time could lead to a “deficit in language development” because of a perceived lack of social interaction in the videos in question. This is certainly not that case with PsP. One of the hallmarks of this program is Mr. Rob’s social interaction with viewers.

What if I can't sing or play an instrument?

Don’t worry… that’s why we’re here! We take it super slow with one bell at a time, and we slowly scaffold our way to playing more and more complex songs. You’ll have no problem modeling the actions for your kids and there’s a good chance you’ll end up learning to play an instrument in the process!

The pitch of the bells and Mr. Rob’s singing will also help guide your and your child’s singing.

The most important thing is to remember that you are facilitating an empowering and fun learning experience for your child. Be confident in your ability to be his or her first favorite teacher! Your modeled enthusiasm—even if slightly off-key—will show your child that it is okay to keep trying even if you’re not perfect, and that sometimes the road to mastery requires a little stumbling.

Can PsP substitute for music lessons?

While the benefits of a private music education cannot be overstated, many of our students are not quite ready for expensive, one-on-one music lessons. Young children have difficulty with complex, traditional instruments like guitar and piano, and these seem to be the most popular among private instructors.

If you can find a teacher to incorporate, singing, hand signs, and bells into your child’s musical play, PsP can be a great complement to music lessons.

Preschool Prodigies provides the perfect springboard for future music lessons, once your child is ready to move beyond.

How often should I practice with my child?

The point of the Playground is to give children repeatable, predictable and enjoyable experiences through meaningful play with pitch. We highly encourage SHORT, BUT REGULAR practice. For the early learner, it’s better to get 5-10 minutes of practice each day, than to only get an hour of music once a week.

Again, we want to make memorable pitched-based experiences for your kids, and short, but regular practice is the best way to do this. If you get really into all of the materials (videos, workbooks, songbooks) you will have plenty of materials and plenty of inspiration to keep the musical play fresh and creative for you and your child!

What if I can't start right away?

With a regular Playground membership, you have access to all content for one year. If you can’t get started right away it’s okay, but remember that there is a critical period in which children develop their sense of pitch.

With a lifetime Playground membership, you have access to all content forever! This is a great option for parents with multiple children, but again, don’t miss out on your young child’s unique ability right now!

Remember that some children get exposure to pitch from the day they are born via their native language, and so it’s never too soon to start giving your kids meaningful exposure to pitch.

What is your refund policy?

We offer a no-questions-asked refund to each customer within 60 days of every purchase. If you are not satisfied with our product, then simply send us an email and we will refund your purchase right away.

Our goal has always been to create a happy, thriving music community. If you are not thrilled with the product, or are not enjoying the experience, then we have no interest in forcing you to stay an unhappy member.

What kind of access do I have to Mr. Rob?

Unlike most programs like this, you have direct access to Mr. Rob for support. Want to request a specific song? Have a new feature idea for the program? Is something we made not working quite right for you?

Mr. Rob is available and happy to help everyone who is a part of the program. He has been in e-mail contact with parents and teachers almost daily since launch day in 2015 and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future! Just don’t be surprised if the time-stamps on the e-mails are in the wee-hours of the morning.

What kind of access do I have to my membership?

You can log in from any web-connected device at anytime and you have unlimited access to the videos and workbooks once you’re inside. Have multiple kids? Print multiple copies!

With a personal license though, you are limited to being logged into one device at a time.

Not connected to the web? Consider purchasing a lifetime membership so you can download the videos directly to your computer!

Which color-coded instruments work well with this program?

Anything that’s color coded via Chromanotes will match our system exactly. This includes the Deskbells we recommend as well as Boomwhackers.

There are other sets of color coded instruments that ALMOST match our colors, and if you have some of those, it’s usually not that hard for kids to adjust.

For instance, some instruments color coded G as Blue (where as we call it Teal, and blue is G#). This isn’t that difficult for a kid to understand, especially because Teal is essentially Blue-Green.

My internet connection is unreliable; can I download the videos?

Yes! If you sign-up for a lifetime membership you can download all 60+ videos straight to your computer! If you have a regular membership to the Playground, you can upgrade to a lifetime membership for a pro-rated fee. For specific concerns about your membership, email
